Everyone I Know is Buying a House & Having Babies {aka Decorating Inspiration for My Basement Apartment}

Is there some kind of house buying epidemic that's going around? If so I wish I could catch it. In the past month 4 of my friends have bought houses. I'm kind of jealous because at the moment my career future is so unstable I can't even afford to move to a different apartment (for clarification, I don't hate my apartment, I hate it's location). Poop is what I say to that, poop.

Luckily we don't have a security deposit, so I'm hoping that if things settle down a bit in the next few months and I'm able to secure at least one source of stable income we'll be able to bounce even though we're resigning our lease next month. Also, I don't feel bad because we live in a basement, next to the laundry room, with what sounds like a herd of elephants living above us. This herd of elephants also likes to hangout in the backyard behind the apartment and look into our windows.

And so I find myself in a trying time -you know, that time where it seems like all your friends are moving forwards with their lives, being all successful and what not and you're just sitting there on your bum? I am pretty sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. There's just something about being in your [late] 20s and seeing your friends getting married, buying houses, having babies and going on fantastic vacations that makes you feel like a failure, no matter how much you know it isn't true.

/Pity party.

So let's move on and look at some basement apartment inspiration, because I might as well make the best of the situation.

Yep. And thats why I will not be going to my 10 year HS reunion. Unless I happen find a large pile of cash on the ground and buy a house, land some fancy pants job, or get engaged. And the chances of those things happening are about the same chances as me having won the lotto last week- which I didn't do.

    1. My goal was to have a boyfriend and have graduated by my 10 year reunion. So far the boyfriend part is good, but graduating is looking iffy...Calling myself "doctor" would at least make up for the fact that I live below the poverty line.

  3. I feel so bad - I'm in the middle of house hunting and I have a litter of kids. I think the reason everyone is buying is because of all the affordable house plans out. We would never be able to do it without that extra boost -plus- the houses where we live are insanely cheap. I would live in a hole if I were still in VA, houses were so expensive. You are not a failure. I had kids really late {28} and am just now looking into homes {29}. When I'm pooped from the day and kids crawling all over me, going crazy, making me nuts - I MISS my old life. Enjoy every day of it! I'm jealous of your life.

    1. Haha don't say 28 is really old - that's where I am now! But yeah it also depends on where you live, it would probably takes YEARS AND YEARS to afford to live in my hometown! Although it's not so much as the mortgage that's the problem, since rent is close to what that would be, it's more the down payment and the fact that we don't know where we'll be in a year so it doesn't make sense to get settled now...and even though it doesn't make sense I still feel bad about it!

  4. Hi,

    My favourites are the first and second ones.
    They have a good balance between style and comfort and the layout is harmonious.

  5. Don’t worry too much, Jess. It’s better to buy a house when you are really ready for it. Although it’s nice that you’re thinking about your future. You might face bigger financial problems if you don’t think this one through in a practical way. You can start by saving more money and improving your credit score if you have any so that when the time comes, you’ll be all set.

  6. Medschool took a lot of my time too. I’m not sure if I enjoyed those years of studying while others are living their lives. Well, things got better though. It will surely turn around for you too. ; ) Just wait and see. As my professor used to tell us, “At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.”

  7. I can relate to your story. Been there, done that. You shouldn’t feel sorry for yourself, trust me. Enjoy the current status you have right now because I know that things will change for the better. :’) Anyhow, these home decorating ideas were great. You might as well make this as your inspiration to achieve something great in your life!
